I ♥ Typography

Sooo, exciting my catalog from Photo-Lettering.com just arrived and it is insanely gorgeous! I just wish I was eligible to take Typography at uni, because it really is one of my BIG obsessions and I'm afraid their catalog has just fueled my lust. The fonts were a casualty of the digital publishing revolution. However House Industries acquired the collection in 2003 and made them once again accessible for public use.

I've taken some photo's of my favorite pieces, check them out, oh and by the way you can order your own catalog here.

Beautiful isn't it?

Stronger Student Culture

I love university; I really do however there is one BIG part I feel that's missing from my Uni experience and that it the student culture. At my Uni we're quite little compared to other universities and our campus is incredibly spread out. When I was in High-School one of the things I most looked forward to was the student culture and the clubs and general involvement. Because you see at high-school I didn't get involved I was all wrapped up in my relationship at the time and I let such great experience's slip me by. So, new year, new opportunities I was all ready for it. So you can only imagine my disappointment when I found none.
So half way through this year (in a new healthy relationship, I may add)! I decided to try to involve myself in Massey's student politics’, SO I volunteered to be the class rep for my Critical Studies lecture. Maybe I'm just a giant geek but I was surprised that I had no one to go up against for the position or to contend for it with. The position it's-self holds many perks like free pizza at meetings, a reference for job searching and the opportunity to be granted a scholarship. However, let me quickly point out these were NOT defining factors, and I actually didn't find out until after appealing.
Anyway, about a month ago I got an email about elections for a position on the student council, I left it about a week before I nervously emailed back asking if first years could apply, thankfully the answer was yes! So, I got myself nominated for COCA executive. Now, if you don't know the executive of COCA (Collage Of Creative Arts) is the voice for all the art and design students, help's solve problem's and make's learning better for the students. However, the New Zealand Government is pushing a bill to make student association fee's optional which potentially means the end of the student association and the end of free lunches and events, but even worse the end of freedom of student speech, representation and advocacy. The even worse news here of course is that it is most likely that this bill will pass.
So with this my dreams of a happy and close university atmosphere will be completely destroyed unless we pull together and help to save the association, creating a stronger, united student base. In a way the VSM bill could be the best thing to happen to the university culture, but only if we all pull together and help work towards our freedom. SO, if there is any Massey Wellington student's reading... Vote for me, because I swear that I will make this happen and I will work bloody hard to make sure it does.

Off to the Zoo

Have you ever had one of those overwhelmingly magical experiences, that give you understanding that you never before truly had?

I'm not sure if I have had before but on Wednesday the Wellington Zoo was $5 entry so my friends, Ellie, Lexy, Jake and I couldn’t turn it down so off we went. Really, I don't care what anyone say's the zoo is fun at any age + we got a free red panda poster, so you can't really beat it! Some of the animal's were quite funny and lapped up the attention and it was quite cute, especially these little Kune Kune pigs that posed in the sunlight for multiple photographs.

Sweet aren’t they?
At 12.30 each day the Zoo does the giraffe feeding and everyone get's a small stick of leaves and then they come up with their long purple tongues and pull the foliage out of you hand. Anyway I absolutely had to do this! Luckily there were lots and lots of people all scrambling to do this so the giraffe was around for a long time, and up close she (or he) was stunning! Their eyes are so beautiful and gentle, so after feeding her and getting accidentally licked I was able to touch her face and give her a stroke. It was so amazing, she was very soft and my heart beat wildly at excitement of actually touching a giraffe. I well recommend it!

Anyway, this magical moment that I was writing about at the beginning was not being able to stroke a giraffe it was actually at the Baboon enclosure of all places. Now baboons are quite cute when they’re little and they are also much more trusting. So while we were standing at the glass the most gorgeous baby baboon slowly make's it's way closer and closer to us until it's sitting on the ledge on the other side of glass. I have no idea why I did it but I put my hand of the glass right beside the little monkey (!) And, oh gosh it was so cute and amazing and special because it put it's hand right atop of mine on the glass!!!

He/She took her hand away and I mine, stupidly though I did it again and the baboon did it again too. Luckily my friend Lexy managed to get a picture just before the mum decided to come over and bang very angrily on the glass at me! I'm not quite sure what startled the baby to call it's mum over because there were a lot of people milled around, or it may have simply had enough. Needless to say I jumped out of my skin and moved rapidly backwards. However the experience of being so close with the baby baboon and seeing it's intelligence was so amazing that the mother's attempt to protect her baby didn’t dampen the moment at all.

The only downer to the day was that Sean the Sun Bear had decided to stay in hidden in his hut, and that I found that they no longer have Zebra's. But apart from that the day was pretty perfect and I think next year if they do $5 Winter Wednesday's I'll definitely go again!Anyway, That's me for now.
